  Jerry Orten

  Special Counsel

  Jerry works with community associations in all areas of law. From community formation and community change and amendment, to governance, collection and enforcement issues, and for over 30 years. Recognizing the unique qualities of each association and its leadership, Jerry focuses on a balanced approach to complex issues, assisting associations in adding and preserving the value of the properties of members. He delivers creative solutions that enhance community relations. Jerry has played and continues to have an influential role in Colorado law and in legislation affecting community associations. He assisted in the drafting of the bill that became the Colorado Common Interest Ownership Act (CCIOA) and has been involved in over 20 amendments to that Act. Jerry served on Governor Romer’s Task Force on Large Planned Communities. He frequently provides expert counsel to other attorneys, testifies as an expert in court, testifies at the State Capitol and advises legislators and lobbyists.

  Candyce D. Cavanagh

  Partner

  Candyce has an extensive background in community association law and provides practical counsel to community associations. Candyce has many years of experience serving and representing community associations. This experience also contributes to Candyce’s appreciation of the unique factors of each community she works with and her ability to formulate solutions for community needs. In addition to representing community associations, Candyce’s background includes assisting developers in setting up new community associations. This background gives Candyce an additional perspective on the operations of communities from their inception. Emphasizing preventive law, Candyce counsels clients on a wide range of transactional matters including assisting Boards and managers with interpreting existing governing documents and, when advisable, preparing amendments or redrafting those documents. Candyce has extensive experience in reviewing and drafting contracts, reviewing insurance policies and addressing a wide range of general real estate issues that face community associations.

  Lauren C. Holmes

  Co-Managing Partner

  Lauren is a founding member of the firm. She provides experienced and practical advice to associations as a transactional attorney. Lauren has extensive experience identifying legal issues in a proactive manner and recommending realistic solutions based upon a keen understanding of homeowners associations. In addition to providing day-to-day legal advice, she educates boards on how to conduct legal and effective meetings, has assisted in successfully amending governing documents and has assisted associations with communicating the importance of the amendment and obtaining the necessary owner approvals. Lauren aids associations in preventing the escalation of disputes with owners, and reviews association insurance policies for compliance with governing documents, Colorado law and best business practices. Lauren also assists associations in dealing with local governments on issues related to code enforcement, condemnation, new development, easements and other issues. Lauren is a frequent speaker at educational programs for managers and boards sponsored by both the firm and community organizations, and has been recognized for her dedication to the education of board members and managers.

  Jonah Hunt

  Co-Managing Partner

  Jonah represents associations in a broad range of litigation matters, including those involving construction, covenant enforcement, foreclosure, easements, elections, leasing, and governance disputes. He also represents associations in first-party property claims, appraisals and litigation, obtaining multiple recoveries in excess of $1M. Jonah also advises community associations on transactional matters, including the interpretation and amendment of governing documents, election and voting issues, and preparation of opinion letters, policies and rules. He gives managers and board members the information and guidance they need to make informed decisions, avoid problems, and minimize risk. Jonah is a frequent speaker at continuing legal educational programs pertaining to community association law, real estate litigation, and first party property claims. He has presented before the American Bar Association, Colorado Bar Association, CLE in Colorado, various Colorado Judicial Districts and local bar associations, private legal providers, and trade groups such as the Community Associations Institute. Jonah has been judicially appointed as a special master to assist in resolving complex common interest community disputes. He is also a trained mediator and volunteers as a pro bono mediator for various organizations. Jonah also represents commercial clients in litigation, having handled cases before the Colorado Court of Appeals, Colorado Supreme Court, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and the U.S. District Court for the State of Colorado.

  Hal Kyles

  Partner

  Prior to joining Orten Cavanagh Holmes & Hunt, Hal was the managing attorney with a leading creditors’ rights law firm in Colorado. He is well versed in Colorado collections law and its strategic application. Hal has over twenty years of professional experience as a prosecuting and trial attorney, business manager, and military officer. His assertive, team-oriented, leadership style allows him to provide timely and effective counsel, while striving to achieve the most cost-effective and suitable collection result for owner associations. An avid runner, Hal has lived in Colorado for more than twenty-five years and enjoys an active outdoor lifestyle.

  Aaron J. Goodlock

  Partner

  Aaron is a Colorado attorney who is also licensed in Michigan. Aaron comes from a background that includes working closely with residential and commercial property management and consulting firms in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Prior to moving to Colorado, Aaron worked with a boutique law firm handling a variety of real estate and business matters, including landlord-tenant law and working with local municipalities to develop sustainable land use policies. Since joining Orten Cavanagh Holmes & Hunt in 2013, Aaron’s practice has focused exclusively on working with homeowners associations and condominium associations in Colorado common interest communities. In his role as general counsel, Aaron represents community associations in a variety matters, including advising clients on day-to-day operations and affairs, Board member education and training, drafting and amending governing documents, developer transition, association governance, insurance, fair housing, covenant enforcement, and resolving owner disputes. Aaron also works with a variety of timeshare and mountain resort communities. Outside of his law practice, Aaron is an avid mountain biker and bike-packer who enjoys traveling to remote areas on his bike. In 2019, Aaron spent several days riding his bike from Telluride to Moab.

  Kelly G. Morrow

  Kelly is an attorney with Orten Cavanagh Holmes & Hunt, LLC serving as general counsel to community associations on a wide range of transactional matters, including, drafting and amending governing documents and policies, document interpretation, real property matters, contract preparation/review and negotiation, insurance review, and risk management. In addition, Kelly has assisted developers in establishing new community associations. Kelly is licensed to practice law in both Colorado and California. Prior to joining Orten Cavanagh Holmes & Hunt, Kelly focused on general real property matters, title review and insurance, construction, development, and other business related matters.

  Joseph A. Bucceri

  Joseph has been a Colorado attorney for over ten years. Having grown up in Florida, Joseph moved to Denver in 2009 after finishing law school. Prior to joining Orten Cavanagh Holmes & Hunt, Joseph served as a prosecutor for seven years for the City of Aurora. He has also previously clerked for a District Court Judge in Adams County. Joseph has experience in the courtroom, filing motions and handling appeals in District Court, as well as before the Court of Appeals and State Supreme Court. Joseph now brings this experience to assisting associations in covenant enforcement and litigation matters. Outside of law practice, Joseph enjoys spending time with his family, including his two dogs. He and his wife enjoy the cultural offerings available with DPAC and have been members of the Colorado Opera for many years.

  Kelly K. McQueeney

  Kelly comes from a background in community association management. Kelly is experienced in advising clients on various legal issues, including document interpretation and amendment, foreclosures, covenant enforcement, and preparation of governance policies and rules. Kelly also has experience representing associations in litigation matters involving covenant enforcement, assessment collection, foreclosure, and bankruptcy.

  Marcus T. Wile

  Marcus is a Colorado attorney who has been practicing law since 2016. Marcus began his career as a solo practitioner with a focus on trusts & estates prior to first joining Orten Cavanagh Holmes & Hunt in 2018 as a litigation attorney. Marcus has worked for several Denver area law firms where his expertise expanded to include general counsel representation of nonprofit corporations and real estate transactions, along with continued growth as a litigator. In 2021 Marcus rejoined Orten Cavanagh Holmes & Hunt in a role that includes advising communities on issues related to nonprofit governance, drafting and amending governing documents, contract review and negotiation, covenant enforcement, and all manner of litigation. Outside of his law practice, Marcus enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with his wife, Sarah, their young son, Harrison, and their goldendoodle, Reggie.
